Japan National Team superstar shortstop Hayato Sakamoto out with thumb injury

The Yomiuri Giants shortstop was back on the field after a few days, practising with his thumb in a cast.

Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) superstar Hayato Sakamoto is out with a fracture of the terminal phalanx of his right thumb.

Sakamoto recently injured himself when he tried to score sliding headfirst into home plate in a game between his Tokyo Yomiuri Giants and the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Sakamoto was back on the field after a few days, working out at an indoor practice field with his thumb in a cast.

Sakamoto was the starting shortstop for Samurai Japan in both the 2015 and 2019 WBSC Premier12. He has been projected to be one of the key players for the Japanese National Team at the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
