WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup star Pete Crow-Armstrong homers to record first MLB hit

The 22-year-old outfielder hit a two-run home run off the Houston Astros reliever Bryan Abreu on 25 April.

The Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros were tied at one in the bottom of the sixth when the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2019 All-World Team outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong stepped to the box in the bottom of the sixth. Crow-Armstrong was batting eighth and had already struck out twice in the game.

With a runner at second, the left-hander was all over the first pitch he saw from reliever Bryan Abreu. His two-run homer proved the game-winner. It was Crow-Armstrong's first MLB hit.

Crow-Armstrong recorded two hits and two runs batted in (RBIs) the following day in a 7-1 win in Boston against the Red Sox, one of the Cubs' five hits as the Red Sox outscored Chicago 17-0 on 27 April and one in a 5-4 extra-inning loss against Boston on 28 April. His streak came to an end when he went 0-for-3 against the New York Mets on 29 April. The Cubs won 3-1 and now lead the National League Central Division with an 18-11 record.

Crow-Armstrong, the son of actors Matthew John Armstrong and Ashley Crow, played at the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, California, when he starred for the United States at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2019.

The New York Mets selected him as the No. 19 overall pick of the 2020 MLB draft. On June 25, he signed for a US$3.4 million bonus.

After his 2021 season was cut short by shoulder surgery, the Mets traded Crow-Armstrong to the Chicago Cubs.

In 2022 the left-hander played the All-Star Future Games and was named one of three best defensive outfielder in Minor League Baseball (MiLB).

After hitting 14 home runs at the Triple-A level, Crow-Armstrong made his MLB debut on 11 September 2023. In his first MLB season, he went hitless through 14 plate appearances in 13 games.
