Kailyn Haig shines as Great Britain top Colombia

Kailyn Haig’s complete game performance and strong offence led Great Britain to an 8-1 victory over Colombia, keeping their hopes for the Play-Offs alive in the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup.

Kailyn Haig pitched a complete game in Great Britain's 8-1 five-inning win over Colombia in the second game of the day on Thursday at the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup Group A at Estádio Municipal de Beisebol Mie Nishi in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

After a scoreless first inning, Great Britain scored in each of the next four innings, including the walk-off run in the bottom of the fifth to reach the seven-run lead. Seven of the nine British players in the lineup hit safely, tallying 10 total hits. Leadoff hitter Jessica Chan and designated player Sydney Teague each connected for a pair of hits, with Cara Edwards collecting two RBIs.

In the bottom of the second, Teague hit a triple to the left field corner and scored the first run of the game on a stolen base play. Kaitlyn Parisi scored the second run on a defensive error, giving the European team a 2-0 lead.

Great Britain doubled their lead in the bottom of the third with back-to-back RBI singles by Teague and Kaitlyn Parisi. A two-run double by Edwards and a run-scoring double from Mia Krueger in the fourth inning extended their lead to 7-0.

Colombia kept the game alive by scoring one run in the top of the fifth to avoid a run-ahead loss. Jazmin Mejia hit a clutch two-out double to drive in Francela Verdura, making the score 7-1. However, Great Britain sealed the victory in the bottom of the fifth when Lily Bell scored on a throwing error by centre fielder Brooke Zuluaga, ending the game at 8-1.
