Girardi names US coaching staff with MLB, Int’l experience for WBSC Premier12, Olympic qualifier

One week after being named USA’s new National Team manager, Girardi brought on a coaching staff that features decades of major league experience and World Series winners.

DURHAM, North Carolina — USA Baseball’s newly appointed manager Joe Girardi moved quickly to confirm his full coaching staff for November’s WBSC Premier12®, the top international baseball event on the calendar leading to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

One week since being named USA’s new National Team manager, Girardi has brought on a coaching staff that features decades of major league experience, including Scott Brosius (Bench Coach), Roly de Armas (Bullpen Coach), Phil Plantier (Hitting Coach), Bryan Price (Pitching Coach), Willie Randolph (Third Base Coach) and 2000 Olympic gold medallist Ernie Young (First Base Coach). The staff boasts 21 years of playing and coaching experience with the U.S. National Team, winning seven gold medals, USA Baseball said.

“I am pleased to introduce a tremendously talented group of coaches as our national team staff for the 2019 WBSC Premier12.” said Girardi. “This is a collection of truly exemplary people who have dedicated their lives to the game of baseball, and I am confident they will represent this team and our country proudly.”

Between Girardi, Brosious and Randolph, the trio has been a part of 13 World Series crowns, all with the New York Yankees.

“Wow a better staff than most MLB teams for sure,” one fan posted on social media following USA Baseball’s announcement.

World No. 2 USA will begin the WBSC Premier12 in Group A, along with host No. 6 Mexico, No. 8 Netherlands and No. 12 Dominican Republic at Estadio de Beisbol Charros de Jalisco in Guadalajara from 2-5 November. The U.S. will open against Europe’s top-ranked team, the Netherlands.

The top two from the group will advance to the Super Round, 11-16 November, which will be played in Japan at Chiba’s ZOZO Marine Stadium and the Tokyo Dome.

The top nation from the Americas in November’s global battle will qualify into the Olympic baseball tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

At the inaugural WBSC Premier12 in 2015, USA reached the Final, before falling to Asia powerhouse Korea.
