Mexican Baseball League delays Opening Day

Originally scheduled to begin on 6 April, the Mexican Baseball League has postponed its season start tentatively until 11 May.

The season of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB-Liga Mexicana de Beisbol) has been postponed for a second time out of respect for player, personnel and spectator health and safety with regards to the coronavirus.

Originally scheduled to begin on 6 April, the LMB postponed the season start tentatively until 11 May when the coronavirus pandemic loomed in the country in mid-March. However, following some unfavourable predications by the Mexican government regarding the duration of the quarantine, league President Horacio de la Vega has now announced that the season start has been postponed indefinitely.

"Together we fight against this terrible pandemic," de la Vega said. "We will win only if we work as a team: the League, the teams, the players, the umpires and all our fans."

De la Vega said the LMB has maintained a close relationship with Federal health authorities during the process of confirming dates for the season start and that he is working with broadcasting partners, sponsors as well as Omar Canizales, the President of the Mexican Pacific League (LMP, Liga Mexicana del Pacifico), to analyze the different scenarios and prepare for the new date of 11 May. "We will make decisions in the interest of our players, umpires, sponsors, commercial and institutional partners and all our collaborators," added de la Vega.

LMB and LMP are proud Associate Members of the World Baseball Softball Confederation.
